It is no accident that some of the world's most important cities are situated by the river. In ancient times, people settled along the banks of rivers, because they found food and water for their essential needs.
Soon, people learnt that the fertile soil along the rivers was good for growing crops and some of the worlds greatest civilizations sprung and flourished alongside them.
Centuries later, rivers opened up routes for trade, exploration and settlement and this marked the birth of some great cities. Even today, rivers continue to remain important for they provide transportation routes, water for drinking and irrigating farmlands, and power for homes and industries.
